It's All About The Books - Vol. 7
It's time to talk about books, I got into kind of a reading slump in August so this post should be short and sweet. I'm going to do better for September though because I've hopped back on the reading train, whoo whoo.
Orange Is The New Black by Piper Kerman - Here's the thing I read a lot of reviews calling Piper Kerman a privileged white lady who's life was all roses until she got caught and then she used her situation to write a book and make money. So what and good for her, she turned a bad situation into a money making venture. To me none of that matters because the important thing that Piper Kerman did was accurately depict what life in prison is like for everyone. Not just privileged white ladies who made mistakes. If you want to know what daily prison life is like read this book, she doesn't exaggerate in any way that I could find. I offer this review in my professional opinion after spending two years working at a prison. 4 out of 5 stars.
Tiny Little Thing by Beatriz Williams - I've loved A Hundred Summers and The Secret Life of Violet Grant so I had high hopes for Tiny Little Things. Unfortunately the story idea couldn't keep me interested. The writing was stellar and the setting fabulous but the wife of a politician in love with her husbands war hero cousin held no interest for me. It's not the authors fault and I would recommend this book to any friend who was interested in politics and historical fiction, I'm just not that person. I did not finish this book, so although I rated it 1 out of 5 stars on Goodreads because there is no DNF rating I am not going to rate it anything in this post. Like I said if you politics and historical fiction this might just be a winner for you.
The House On Mermaid Point by Wendy Wax - The final book in the Ten Beach Road Trilogy this book did not disappoint. While the second book followed a very similar formula to book one this book took it's own direction. I appreciated the Florida Keys setting and the ending which wrapped up the story in a neat little bow. Another great light easy beach read. 4 out of 5 stars.
The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy - I saw this book listed on a literary map as one of the most famous books set in South Carolina so I put it on my to read list. I had read a Conroy book before and really liked it a lot so I was looking forward to an interesting read. Unfortunately I found this book to be overwritten and I started skimming before I hit page 100. I considered the fact that the book had 600+ pages and gave it up by page 100. I think this would have been a great book if I could have gotten past paragraphs full of flowery unnecessary writing. 1 out of 5 stars.
Where'd You Go Burnadette by Maria Semple - I'd had this book on my to read list since March but kept passing it over for other books that sounded more interesting. Then I read an article that listed it as a book that could make you laugh out loud. While I did not laugh out loud, I did giggle quietly a couple of times. I ended up really enjoying this book, it was a quick read in a unique format. 4 out of 5 stars.
What did you read last month?

Have you watched the show for Orange is the New Black? And if so, how does it compare to the book? We started watching and then stopped, but I'd be more interested to pick it up again if, like the book, it's at all accurate to our prison system.
ReplyDeleteOITNB has been on my to read list for longer than I can remember at this point. Glad to hear it's good! Now if I could just get my ass to read it! lol
ReplyDeletePat Conroy is one of my favorite authors and one of the best - if not THE best - descriptive writers about the south in general and the low country in particular. I loved Prince of Tides - heavy stuff but still good.
ReplyDeleteI loved Bernadette!
Wow, I LOVED Prince of Tides- I can't believe it got that low of a rating. Conroy in general is a bit long and flowery, but the story is just so good.
ReplyDeleteBeach Road by Pat Conroy is one of my favorites so I am disappointed this one wasn't as good. Agree with you on OITNB and I'm glad you said it's valid based on your own experiences.
ReplyDeleteWhere'd You Go, Bernadette has been on my TBR list for soo long. I'm glad it was enjoyable! And I wasn't going to put OISTNB on my TBR list when I read other people's reviews, but your review convinced me to.
ReplyDeleteI have been doing the same thing with Where'd You Go, Bernadette, passing it for others but I really do want to read it. You made me giggle to myself with your LOL comment hahaha.
ReplyDeletehmmmm maybe i should give OITNB another shot. i tried to read it about 2yrs or so ago and couldn't get into it!
ReplyDeleteI thought Where'd You Go Bernadette was an okay read. I read OITNB long before it became the Netflix show (which I like a lot as well!) and enjoyed it. I've never read any of Pat Conroy's books but Tiny Little Thing has been on my to read list.
ReplyDeleteI actually purchase The House on Mermaid Point I had no idea it was a series. Glad it was good.
ReplyDeleteglad you enjoyed the bernadette book, i have had it on my list for ages! i'll also be checking out the ten beach read series. i haven't read the orange is the new black book, i watched the first season but it's not really my jam. i might check the book out now after your objective review!
ReplyDeleteWhere'd You Go Bernadette is very cute and not what I expected at all. I wish Goodreads would get on board with a Did not Finish rating because one star seems harsh because as you said, sometimes a book just isn't your taste. And, I hate that I have to mark it as read or keep looking at it on my shelf or delete it completely. I need to be able to just put it to the side so everyone knows I didn't read it and why.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like Orange Is The New Black as much as I thought. I love the show, but the book took a bit for me to get into. But Piper is as stuck up in the book as she is in the show ;) That part was the same.
ReplyDeleteI loved Bernadette!! OITNB is on my radar but haven't gotten around to it. Have you watched Piper's TED talk? Interesting stuff.
ReplyDeleteI really liked Bernadette. It was crazy and fun! I also need to pick up OITNB again. I started it years and years ago and never got back into it. I think I'd appreciate it more now.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about OITNB. Wouldn't most white middle class women be viewed the same way if they went to prison? I would be more apt to dislike her if she had fabricated her story for the sake of money. I read The Prince of Tides a few years ago and it was not a winner for me either.
ReplyDeleteI'm not as enamored with Pat Conroy as a lot of people are. I added Bernadette to my ever-growing list.
ReplyDeleteI read Where'd You Go... last year, I did enjoy it too but you're right it didn't make me laugh out loud.
ReplyDeleteI never read OITNB but I love the tv show, surprisingly. I didn't think I'd be interested in prison life but the show is interesting, now I may need to check out the book! And I agree, good for her for making the best out of a bad situation! I hate when people criticize people for dumb stuff like that.. they're just jealous!
ReplyDeleteBernadette has been on my to read list for ages, so I really should get around to reading it, shouldn't I?
ReplyDeleteI have Where'd You Go Bernadette on my library hold list and am so excited to read it! And I've always been back and forth on wanting to read Orange is the New Black, but you've definitely swayed me more towards reading it!
ReplyDeleteWhere'd You Go Bernadette is a favorite of mine. I loved the quirky mother and how they finally find her. I read Orange Is The New Black also and I really enjoyed it. It was crazy how she fell into that drug crowd and what happened to her. Totally agree about Prince Of Tides!
ReplyDeleteI wanted more out of Bernadette and there were a few places I maybe smile-chuckled, but no real lolz. I've been fighting the OITNB phase. Maybe eventually I'll get on the train, but I'm not sure I'm there yet.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I just spent about 30 minutes binge reading your blog. I don't think I have it followed on Bloglovin for some reason.
ReplyDeleteSecond of all, I completely agree with what you said about Orange is the New Black. People are completely missing the point of the book.
I added Where'd You Go, Bernadette to my TBR list after seeing a post about it on Goodreads. Glad to know you approve as well!
