It's All About The Books - Vol. 4

Thanks to half of a month being sick May was a slow reading month for me, I even had to return to the library one half read and one un-read book. No sense in renewing when you're not sure when you'll feel well enough to read. The good news is one of those books is on it's way back to me!

Here's what I read in May:

// The Liar by Nora Roberts - If you've read Nora Roberts you know what you're in for when you pick up one of her books. It felt like it took an extraordinarily long time to get to the "twist" which was as predictable as expected. I've always found her characters and their histories more interesting than the plot when it comes to Nora Roberts' stories. 3 stars for great characters.

// Does This Beach Make Me Look Fat? By Lisa Scottoline & Francesca Serritella - This is not the type of book I would usually pick up but it looked interesting enough to read for free when I saw Goodreads was giving it away. I won and so I read the book, I'm so glad I did. This is a collection of interrelated short stories written by a mother and daughter about life in general. It's kind of like reading a blog, I found myself laughing out loud at several of the stories. I've already checked and my library carries their other books, yayy! 4 stars.

Judy Moody Was in a Mood. Not A Good Mood A Bad Moody. By Megan McDonald - Not another book I would choose for myself obviously but when I registered Little K for kindergarten I had to sign some parent promise crap that included reading to her or listening to her read to me for a certain amount of time a day. I don't have a problem with that but I'm over The Hungry Caterpillar and Green Eggs and Ham, so I did a little research on chapter books with a few pictures mixed in. This is one of the books I came up with. I read it to Little K a few chapters at a time, I was happy to see she stayed interested and engaged even suggesting to me we read a few times. Judy's attitude could use a little work but other than that the story was fun. 3 stars.

// A Summer Affair by Elin Hilderbrand - This was one of two Elin Hilderbrand books I have not read, I'll admit the title and the blurb on the back didn't really speak to me.It's about a woman with a family having a summer affair, not a fun summer topic in my opinion but I love Hilderbrand's books so I decided to read it anyway. The book lagged for me at times and we spent a lot of time inside the thoughts of the protagonist before other POV's were introduced. The end was unsatisfying in that a lot of story lines were left at loose ends, I think a short epilogue might have wrapped the story up nicely. I did think she did a good job portraying the emotions and thoughts that come with an affair. 3 stars.

// The Shore by Sara Taylor - I added this book to my to read list after I saw it recommended in a couple of articles and noticed there wasn't yet a wait for it at my library (yayyyy)! This is another set of interconnected short stories that take place on a set of islands off the coast of Virginia from the late 1800's to 2143. All of the stories save one were connected to an interesting family tree in the front of the book which I referred to often through out my reading. The one story that was not connected to the family tree did take place in the area and ended up being connected to the other stories by the end of the book. Dealing with topics like domestic violence, murder, and rape I would not call this a light beach read but I really enjoyed it. 4 stars.

  1. I always want to like short stories, but then I don't. I don't know why. Maybe I should try The Shore, it sounds interesting.

My mom is a big fan of Lisa Scottoline.

  6. I've read a lot of Nora Roberts, though not for a while. Agreed about the characters being more compelling than the plots. I've read one of the Scottoline and daughter books but I can't remember which one (I know it's not this one, but that title makes me laugh) and how cool that you won it! LMAO at having to sign some parent promise crap!

  7. Does This Beach Make Me Look Fat? doesn't sound like the typical book I'd read either, but the title alone made me giggle, so I might need to give it a look.

  8. Does The Beach Make Me Look Fat? looks interesting, but I'm not big on short stories. I think I just like to be immersed in the story, and it's hard to get that in short story format. However, I do like humorous short stories like David Sedaris books.
