// Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult - I know this is going to be hard to believe but this was the first Jodi Picoult book I've read. I learned a lot about elephants I didn't know before but I didn't love this book as much as I thought I would. The twist at the end was unexpected and not a route I would have chosen if I had written this book. I gave this book 3 stars.
// The First Husband by Laura Dave - Goodreads recommended this book to me and it's not the first time I've been disappointed by their choices. I stopped reading this book on page 58, the main character was whiny and somewhat needy. I didn't like a single character in the book so I moved on, life is to short to read bad books. I gave this book 1 star.
// The Witch's Daughter by Paula Brackston - Another Goodreads recommendation that got me no where. The book switched between modern fantasy and historical fiction, I could really get on board with the modern fantasy but the historical fiction part wasn't interesting enough to make me finish the book. I gave this book 1 star.
// Ladies Night by Mary Kay Andrews - As a "lifestyle blogger" I really identified with Grace, I wanted to fight for her and her blog. Although I would have accused her of being a "dumb woman" and the mystery was slightly cheesy overall this book is a great easy beach read if you're in the market for such things. I gave this book 4 stars.
The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins - Please don't send me hate mail but this book wasn't the great read I was expecting. The characters were all pretty unlikable and at times the story seemed kind of hard to believe. I felt like the reading was tedious at times and while the ending was unpredictable it was again a little hard to believe. I gave this book 3 stars
// The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion - Thankfully The Rosie project did not disappoint. Although a little hard to get use to the formal conversation style once I got into the swing of things I really enjoyed the story. Having lived with a future professor of gentics for several years I can related to some of Don's social awkwardness. I gave this book 4 stars
// Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel - I really like post apocalypse books and was all set to love this book. I really enjoyed this book until the last section, for me the ending just kind of fizzled when all along I thought the book had been building up to something great. I gave this book 3 stars.
// MWF seeking BFF by Rachel Bertsche - First of all I knew this book was written by a blogger before she even mentioned her blog. It was also easy to tell someone had paid her to complete this project in order to write the book. It was hard to keep track of which friend was which, how they had met, and what friend dates they had previously been on. I did find some of her insights about adult friendships and making new friends dead on. While I want be paying to find a friend anytime soon some of her girl date ideas might just get put to use. I gave this book 3 stars.
// The Girls of Mischief Bay by Susan Mallery - I eagerly stalked this book as it made it's way up my library hold list. I wasn't disappointed, this book offers a great female friendship book without a ton of romantic subplots that usually accompany this type of book. I'm looking forward to books 2 and 3 already. I gave this book 4 stars.
// The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon - Another Goodread recommendation, this time one that didn't flop before page 100. The mystery wasn't really that mysterious the plot was original, the story was good enough to keep me reading. I gave this book 3 stars.
// The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz - Recommended by Goodreads based on my liking of Stephanie Plum. Isabel is no Stephanie Plum, she spends the first 100 pages telling us stories about her and her investigative family but no real plot is revealed. If you don't have a plot by page 100 I'm done reading. I gave this book 3 stars.
// The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Garielle Zevin - Not what I was expecting but still a great book. If you've ever dreamed of owning a bookstore this book is for you. The mysterious package noted in the book summary wasn't at all what I thought it would be but added so much to the story. I gave this book 5 stars.
// Blood Magick by Nora Roberts - After reading the first two books in this series I was expecting a real steamy exciting read for book three. Unfortunately steamy excitement didn't really show it's head. A satisfying ending to a trilogy, I gave this book 3 stars.
What did you read that you would recommend to me last month?
I have a few of these on my "to read" list already lol! I really want to read The Rosie Project, everyone seems to really like it. I really want to read The Girl on the Train, even though you are not the only person I have read that has seemed underwhelmed. lol! Ladies' night sounds really good too! I've never read any of Picoult's books yet but everyone has been suggesting them to me, so I picked up a couple of them at a library sale for 50 cents each.
ReplyDeleteI added A.J. Fikry to my list! The Girls of Mischief Bay just came in for me at the library.
ReplyDeleteI adored The Rosie Project. Sorry you didn't like Girl on the Train, that's happened to me with books everyone loves and that's okay!
I liked The Rosie Project too, as you'll read today. I want to go back to your post about the Goodreads recs but I haven't done it yet. Sorry it's steering you wrong, though! Bummed to hear that about The Girl on the Train. I bought it, as a real book, which is harder for me to make time to read so I've yet to start it but you aren't the first to say it doesn't live up to the hype.
ReplyDeleteI have the new Jodi Picoult to read. I've read all of her books. If you binge read them, you will find a lot of similarities between her story lines, like family moral dilemma happens and then you go to court. I love her use of similes. The way she uses them reminds me of Alice Hoffman which is one of my favorite authors.
ReplyDeleteI also have Station Eleven on my tbr as well. I am a fan of Jennifer MacMahon books. Sorry to hear you didn't like her new one. Have you read any of her older books?
I liked the Winter Witch for the exact opposite reason you did! I loved the flashback parts of the book and could have done without the modern story.
I read MWF Seeking BFF a while ago and I was just telling someone about it when talking about blogging-- and how easy it would have been for her to make friends via blogging-- I had no idea / didn't remember that she was a blogger! I've never read anything by Jodi Picolout but have Leaving Time on my list after so many people kept recommending it- I'm wondering if it will live up to the hype.
ReplyDeleteI secretly love Jodi Piccoult, though most of her stories follow the same formula. I haven't tried that one though.
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way about The Witch's Daughter. And I really wanted to like it! I have found myself in the same situation with Goodreads recommendations. That's why I'm trying this link up!
Thanks for the shares.
AJ Firky and Station Eleven are on my to-read list.
ReplyDeleteLadies Night was a cute book. Quick, easy, fun read. Leaving Time did get a bit preachy with the elephants but I enjoyed it nonetheless. She's a very formulaic writer but if you want to read more of hers, I recommend Nineteen Minutes and The Storyteller. Also The Pact. The Girl on The Train and The Rosie Project were also great.
I am glad you liked Mischief Bay, I did too. The Rosie Project was so quirky and cute. I am in the middle of Girl on The Train and I am feeling the same way. The jumping back in forth from characters to time frames is making me not like it as much. I am hoping it gets better.
ReplyDeletei have the witches daughter on my "later" shelf and although i didn't really entice me, i kept it on there...maybe i'll take it off!!!! i'm on hold for station 11 (STILL!!). my library system is ridiculous so i've given up on recent books since i'll never get them this year and have moved to popular books from the mid-2000 LOL
ReplyDeleteMWF seeking BFF- keeps popping up from friends of mine. I don't know if I would like it or not, BUT I think I might give it a try
ReplyDeletei enjoyed the girl on the train but it wasn't absolutely amazing and i didn't like any of the characters at all, so i feel you there. i loved the rosie project and i'm really leaning away from leaving time now that everyone is talking about elephants haha. thats weird!
ReplyDeleteI'm on hold for Station 11 but that is so disappointing it doesn't end well!!! I hate when that happens, I just finished a book this month that I felt like that happened in :( Life is too short for bad books, but I find it so hard to not finish them once I start. Good for you not to waste your time!
ReplyDeleteI've never read Jodi Picoult either. I will, someday, just to see what the hype is about. AJ is already on my to read list. I've read a couple of Jennifer MacMahon...one I really liked, one that I thought was dumb. So, Winter People...I think I'll give that a pass.
ReplyDeleteHoly hell you read a lot of books! I'm always on the fence about Jodi Picoult. I tend to get caught up in the ethics of the situation, instead of just taking if for the story that it is. I always end up pissed off at the end.
ReplyDeleteI keep hearing about The Girl On The Train, and I have a friend letting me borrow when she's done. I'll try to go in with an open mind, but I too, seem to hate the books everyone loves and vise versa. Like Gone Girl... I loved it, loved the ending. Everyone else hated it.
The Girls of Mischief Bay looks like fun!
ReplyDeleteWhew, you read a lot! I can't wait to read Girl on the Train and see if it lives up to the hype. I want to read Station Eleven at some point. Guess you won't be reading anymore Goodreads recs, huh?
ReplyDeleteSo many good books! I've never read Jodi Picoult before and everyone recommends Leaving Time to me. I guess I better read it! I felt the same way you did about The Girl on the Train! I want to give MWF seeking BFF a try too.
