Welcome to the month of 3's, I'm hoping for something better for March! I have one more book challenge selection to go before I'm done with Erin's challenge, I feel like I've already accomplished something based on the fact I suck at challenges in general.
Attachments by Rainbow Rowell - As with all Rowell books I've read so far I enjoyed this read, unfortunately, it's my least favorite off all her books I've read too. I loved that it was set around the time I graduated from high school and that Jennifer and Beth conduct their office friendship via email for us to read. I found Lincoln a little weird and creepy, try as I might I didn't get the mother/son relationship. 3/5
Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler - I'm not sure what I was expecting this book to be about but it wasn't what I got. I enjoyed the story although I felt like some places lacked the detail I wanted while other places had more than I thought I needed. The switching between past and present annoyed me at first until I figured out how it worked with the plot. Kip was my least favorite character and I feel like I could have spent a little more time getting to know Beth. 3/5
The Murderer's Daughter by Jonathan Kellerman - This book was just okay for me, I had not previously read any Kellerman books although if you have this book is connected to his Alex Delaware series. The last 1/4 of the book felt long and overwritten if you're looking for a likable non-psychotic main character this book probably isn't for you. 3/5 (Book Challenge Selection)
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern - This book was on my to-read list forever, unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. It took me a really long time to get into the story, about half the book which is more of a chance than I give most books. After I finally got involved with the story and the characters I found myself flipping back to get dates and events in the correct order since there were several things going on at several different dates throughout the book. I wasn't a huge fan of the ending although it could have been much worst. 3/5 (Book Challenge Selection)
Private India: City On Fire by James Patterson - I'd read the first few Private books so I had a frame of reference when reading this one. There were a few moments where I thought to myself well that didn't make sense but they weren't central to the plot line so I didn't have a problem moving past them. The book was fast and easy the story was mostly enjoyable. 3/5 (Book Challenge Selection).
PS - You can now find my all of my previous book recommendation posts and other bookish posts on the Biblio-Files Page!
I'm sorry you didn't have anything higher than a 3! I completely bailed on the last book challenge I was in. Unfortunately I had over-confidently purchased most of the books so I still have to read some stuff that I really don't want to anymore.
ReplyDeleteSuch a bummer you ended up with a bunch of 3s this month. Attachments is the only Rainbow Rowell I've read so far, so I'm glad to hear you liked others better!
ReplyDeleteWell boo, I was looking forward to Attachments! But, we do seem to be book opposites a lot of the time so maybe I should be happy that you didn't love it since it means I might? One of my friends loved The Night Circus and is trying to get me to read it but if it requires remembering a detailed timeline then it will definitely frustrate me.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Lincoln was a little weird and creepy, and usually I can't get past that but I loved Attachments! And I seriously loved Shotgun Lovesongs too. Just goes to show though, different strokes! Hope you love some of the next reads on your list.
ReplyDeleteoh i'm sorry about the month of 3s, especially because attachments is one of my faves! i agree with what you said about shotgun lovesongs, i really wanted more beth, or even more felicia. i HATED the night circus when i read it a couple years ago lol.
ReplyDeleteThat sucks that you didn't have any books that stood out this month. I still need to read the Rainbow Rowell books, and I know that I'll get around to them eventually! I love James Patterson books but haven't read any of his Private series. They're generally very good for just passing the time.
ReplyDeleteI really liked Attachments but can see how it wouldn't be everyone's favourite :) I started The Night Circus a few years ago and never finished it...I might revisit it someday though. I enjoyed the first few in the Private series but they kinda trailed off for me.
ReplyDeleteI don't like RR as a rule.
ReplyDeleteI liked The Night Circus a lot when I read it a few years ago.
Attachments is the only Rainbow book I have read so far and I loved it, so if it is your least favorite I have high hopes to read others. I have been meaning to read Shotgun Lovesongs but I am nervous because so many people have hyped it up that I have a feeling I might be a little disappointed. I have Murders Daughter in my Netgalley que since the summer and I haven't read it yet because I couldn't get in to the first chapter and haven't gone back. I may never go back lol.
ReplyDeletegood on all of you for reading so much!!!! I always hope to read more than I do. The private india one sounds so legit!
ReplyDeleteI havent read any Rowell books yet but I think I'll skip The Attachments.
ReplyDeleteI thought the Night Circus looked so good and definitely my type of book but it underwhelmed me too. I have not read any of Rowell's books and will give them a try but probably won't start with The Attachments since it wasn't your favorite. Which would should I try first?
ReplyDeleteAfter E&P, Attachments was my favorite Rowell book. I absolutely adored it. I totally see Jason Segel playing Lincoln in the movie version, too. And I'm sad you didn't love Shotgun Lovesongs, either. I thought it was amazing.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I didn't know there was a Private India. I've read most of the other books as well. Not great, but love the quick, suspenseful read. I thought Attachments was an okay read and really liked The Night Circus.
ReplyDeleteSomeone else (can't think of who, though) had very similar things to say about Shotgun Lovesongs. I really enjoyed the book, but I think much of my enjoyment came from the fact that I connected with the small town, the small town way of life, and with several of the characters. Little things like that can really make or break a book. Hopefully next month will be break your dry spell of 3s. Have a good one!
ReplyDeleteWOW - this was a month of threes! I think what I enjoyed most about Shotgun Lovesongs was how the town was its own character. Beth was my fave too...in the sense that I wanted more of Beth. I read a lot of Patterson, and I pretty much felt the same way you did about Private India. I think it was my least favourite of the Private series.
ReplyDeleteI'm laughing at the 'likable non-psychotic main character' bit because the one thing I realised this month is that it really does make all the difference to me whether I like the main character or not. I'm now wondering whether that makes me really shallow... I hope you get some better scores than 3s next month!
ReplyDeleteToo bad about the 3s :(. I gave Attachments a higher star rating but of the ending after they finally got together. Don't know but I found the guy to be like a big teddy bear, especially after he fixed her flat tire.
