My Shelter Adoption Experience

So if you read yesterday's post you know we adopted a Weimaraner, if you looked at the picture before you started reading you know she is absolutely beautiful. Although it probably didn't feel like luck on her part in mid-December when one of the local animal shelters took her in it sure felt lucky on our part in January when she came up for adoption just as I was stalking all the local animal shelter sites for the perfect new pack addition.

I want to back up just a minute and tell you that all our previous dogs have been rescues but never from shelters. When I wanted a dog in the past I'd find someone getting rid of an unwanted litter of puppies and I'd get one. This time, I decided I wanted to adopt a shelter dog, so many animals in need of loving homes end up in shelters and I wanted to make a difference for one of those dogs. Tyson's only condition was that it had to be a puppy while I wasn't super excited about the early puppy phase relationships are all about compromise so I agreed we should get a puppy.

I started stalking every animal shelter within a 45-minute drive of my house, all animal shelters offer basically the same thing a spayed or neutered pet with all shots for a reasonable price so it didn't matter to me which shelter I adopted from. I had my eyes on a 10-month-old chocolate lab but Tyson said that she wasn't puppy enough so I went back to my stalking searching.

One evening just before I shut off my computer for the night I did a final check of the local shelter sights and noticed one had two 5-month-old Weimaraner's up for adoption. I contact the shelter immediately via their volunteer-run Facebook page for information. I was told there were no pictures and I had to show up in person to adopt so I sent a text to my boss letter her know I would be taking an early extended lunch the next day to see about a puppy. It's always good to have a boss that is a huge animal lover and very flexible with our schedules.

I was at the shelter 5 minutes before they opened for adoptions signed in and waiting to see the puppies. There were a boy and girl, I had told Tyson I wanted a girl but would settle for a boy too. The little boy was in his enclosure, a dark gray with dark gray eyes I almost didn't even bother looking at puppy two. Having told the shelter employee I wanted to see the female I continued to follow him out to the puppy play area.

There walking perfectly on a leash was the prettiest little girl I had ever seen. After a few rounds of fetch with the tennis ball I knew she was going to be ours if Tyson agreed. I sent him some pictures but he didn't respond so I filled out the paperwork and adopted her anyway. She was going to be spayed the next day so I agreed to come back after 4:30 to pick her up.

As I was leaving Tyson said he thought she looked big for 5 months but it was too late she was ours (sometimes relationships are also about executive decisions and asking for forgiveness instead of permission).

When we picked her up they gave us toys, a collar, a leash, and 30 lbs of dog food. I can't think of a better $46 spent, our baby girl is the most loving awesome dog ever. All of our future dogs will be shelter dogs!

Do you have a pet? Did you adopt from a shelter?

  1. Those eyes are a dream!!!! She is just beautiful and it sounds like the perfect fit for your family!!!! While my dogs aren't shelter dogs...I have volunteered at the Humane Society so I feel like I have helped some of the dogs find homes :) I am pretty sure the Mac was a puppy mill dog and I see it as us saving him from a potentially horrible existence had we not taken the last one....the "runt" of the the litter.

  2. $46 is a steal! They're closer to $100 here and no free food! And she's so pretty! Glad she's getting along with Salem. Bauer came from a shelter and I fell in love with his pic online and then he came up to the bars of his little cage for me and I knew he was mine. Duncan was found and headed to a shelter but intercepted beforehand, I believe, and then became Andrew's old roommate's, and then ours.

  3. She's freaking adorable, I love it. We don't get any of that free stuff, man what a deal. here's it's about $100 for a dog, less for a cat, and they have their shots and are spayed/neutered. I got Hawkeye when she was a day away from turning 1. Puppies are cute but I CANNOT do puppy phase. No. Way too much work for someone who currently lives alone and works in an office 9 hours a day.

  4. Marina is so pretty!!! I'm so happy you made the executive decision to get her! She's perfect for you guys! I always think about how happy I am that we got Oatmeal because some other people might not have realized her kidney issue and got her help as early as we did. The only reason we really even originally took her to the vet was because she was having accidents on the couch which wasn't normal for her, whereas someone else may have punished her for it.

  5. awwww <3 she is so pretty! and i agree about the executive decisions. all of our kitties were from shelters, even though they were babies. my dogs at home - one was from a pet shop (over 11 years ago, i didn't know the things i know now but i wouldn't undo it because she's my baby) and the other we found on the side of the road as a puppy. congrats on the new addition!

  6. She is absolutely stunning! Our three cats are all adopted at the same time from the same shelter. So, when it was time for a dog, we went back to that shelter. Then, went to some others. We weren't getting just the right fit. We even talked to a canine psychologist (no lie - that's what they call her) at the original shelter because she wanted to know if the dog we wanted would fit with our family.

So, we found an ad in a local paper like Greensheet (do they have those anymore?). The ad said it was a litter of pups with their first round of shots, and they were giving themselves two weeks or they'd go to the shelter. We wanted a girl. They had two girls left. We couldn't choose, and couldn't leave one behind, so we took both. We were told they were 3/4 Great Dane and 1/4 German Shepherd. Believe me, the mother was not 100% Great Dane, but we didn't care. We were happy with mutts.

Yes, we are the family who went to a shelter for 2 cats and left with 3; went to a shelter for one dog and left with two from a backyard litter.

I'm so happy for your family's addition!

  7. SO pretty- I love her already!!!! :) I'm sadly allergic to just about everything, but we'd still like to get a dog one day when we're home more and/or have more room for one! I'd definitely want to adopt!

  8. She's very pretty.

I would be open to adopting a shelter puppy. We took Mae and Geege off of the hands of others who didn't want them anymore, so while technically rescues, they're not shelter dogs either. Gus is from a breeder, oddly the same breeder Geege is from. They're cousins. LOL

  9. Very cute.

Yes, we got our two cats from the shelter. It was an easy experience.

  10. She's so pretty!

We're aiming for a third dog in the early summer but I'm not sure if we're going to go the shelter route or the rescue route. I'm leaning towards shelter but we'll have to see. I'd like one who's a little older because everyone wants the puppies but I'm terrified that an older one will already have too many issues and not get along with our current pets in residence.
