It's All About The Books - Vol. 8
Oh hey there, remember me? I've been off dream chasing but I thought I should take a break to link up with Steph and Jana for the anniversary edition of Show Us Your Books. Here's what I read in September and October, I'm not reading while I'm dream chasing so hopefully I won't see you for a couple of months.
The Princess Bride by William Goldman - I couldn't finish this book, maybe if I had seen the movie I would understand it's appeal but as far as books go this one wasn't for me. 1/5
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer - I really enjoyed this book, I was looking for something new to fill my Harry Potter void, while this book wasn't Harry Potterish at all it was a great story. 4/5
The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith - I'd been putting off reading this mystery by J.K. Rowling under the pen name Robert Galbraith and I'm sorry I did. The main character Cormoran Strike is as smart as a detective should be, he see's the little details that even a reader looking for them misses. A mystery that will have you asking who did it all the way until the end. 4/5
The Lightening Theif by Rick Riordan - I LOVED this book, if you're into Greek mythology even a little bit this book is for you. I did have to Google a few mythology related things but for me that was half the fun. I like to learn knew things all the time and this book was a fun read that taught me a little more about Greek mythology than I knew before. 4/5
Girl Waits With Gun by Amy Stewart - I like historical fiction and I like books with kick ass women, this book had both. If I had lived during the time period that this book was set in I could see myself being much like the main character. 4/5
The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith - I unfortunately did not enjoy the follow up to The Cuckoo's Calling, the plot about a novelist and his book being the reason for the crime was confusing and sometimes totally out of left field. I did finish just to see what would happen with Cormoran and Robin but I was disappointed on that front too. It won't stop me from reading book 3 in hopes the mystery will be more my speed. 2/5
Some Luck by Jane Smiley - Chapter one of this book was written from the POV of a pre-talking, pre-teething child. It was so unbelievable I didn't even bother with Chapter 2. 1/5
Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell - I really connected with this book on a personal level, finished it in less than 24 hours, recommended it to my sister, who also finished in less than 24 hours. If you haven't read it, that is all. 5/5
Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear - by Elizabeth Gilbert - Do you have a creative dream that you have put off or aren't following for one reason or another? Read this book. It's like a big pep talk or a kick in the creative pants if you will. Elizabeth Gilbert is insightful as always and the glimpse into her creative process was interesting.
What did you read last month?

Boo for Princess Bride 1 star! But it's ok, I forgive you. I have The Lightning Thief on my TBR and now I'm even more excited about it. I LOVE Greek mythology!!! I wrote a research paper on it in high school (reluctantly allowed by my instructor because I came up with a BS premise for it). And I'm definitely intrigued by Big Magic - adding it to my list.
ReplyDeleteYou have so many reads that I am adding to my list!!! The Cuckoo's Calling, The Lightning Thief, Big Magic...yes please to all!!! I have had Eleanor and Park on my list forever but haven't gotten to it yet either. That is coming up soon though!!!
ReplyDeleteLOL at the Some Luck review... I would have avoided that, too! I really liked Eleanor & Park! Good to hear that The Cuckoo's Calling is good - I have put it off, too.
ReplyDeleteOooh, how was Big Magic?! I follow her podcast and have been on the fence whether I want to read this or not.
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to work my way around to Girl Waits with Gun! That sounds right up my alley.
ReplyDeleteEleanor & Park is the only Rainbow Rowell book I liked.
oh bummer about the princess bride, you really should watch the movie though. or, try the audiobook? it's abridged, cuts out a lot of the crap that was unnecessary in the book (in my opinion...).
ReplyDeleteI loved E&P as well, I also connected with it on a personal level. I read the first Percy Jackson a couple years ago and would love to re-read it and then read the rest of the series. It's the perfect example of a book written for kids / teenagers can also be enjoyed by adults.
Thank you for not liking Princess Bride either!!! Hehe. Hmm..never thought I'd like that JK Rowling book but your review entices me. YAY for loving Eleanor & Park! So good! I'd also like to read Gilbert's book since I thought Eat Pray Love was decent.
ReplyDeleteEleanor & Park has been on my list too long! I am going to request it from the library ASAP!
ReplyDeleteE&P was one of my favorite books of last year! And I'm so glad you liked Girl Waits with Gun!! I started Some Luck earlier this year and put it down. Waiting for it again. I'm hoping the rest isn't as slow as the pages I've already read.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that book was really by JK Rowling. I haaaate pen names. I don't get them!!!! Just added it to my list!
ReplyDeleteBig Magic sounds really interesting. I think I might have to read that one.
ReplyDeleteEleanor & Park - there are just not enough words to describe the beauty of that book. It is being made into a movie. The author is writing the screenplay. On twitter, she said her biggest fear is that Hollywood will try to make Eleanor skinny. I loved that. I hope it stays as true to the book as possible. I intend to read The Silkworm, although you haven't encouraged me to rush out and get that one. ;)
ReplyDeleteI've never been a huge Princess Bride fan either, but maybe if I read the book I'll get it? We'll see. I added several of your books to my TBR list!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed E&P, but I lurve, lurve, luuurrrveed Attachments. Probably because I'm not an overly huge fan of YA.
I can't wait to read Girl Waits with Gun. I was hoping my book club would choose it for this month, but they didn't. Still, I'll get to it. I've never read Princess Bride and honestly only just saw the movie last year. It didn't do much for me. I finally added Eleanor & Park to my list since pretty much everyone I know loves it!
ReplyDelete1/5 for princess bride?!?!?!?!??!?!?!!? awww too bad; i LOVED that book; it was so incredible!
ReplyDeleteThe Princess Bride is on my to-read list. I love the movie, so I'm hoping I'm not disappointed! I am also dying to read Big Magic!
