Times They Are A Changin'

So here I am another weekend past and no words were read, not even in a magazine. One me knows I need to sit myself down with a book and not let myself get up until I've read at least 50 pages. On the other hand there's the me that says there is lots of time to read books but your kid only has 2 sleeps left until school starts so spend time with her because times they are a changin'.

Even after she is asleep I am planning schedule changes for all, we are getting up every morning at 6:30 AM so there will be no fights about it come Thursday. That means an earlier bed time for everyone too, even though Little K very logically wants to know why she has to get up before the sun and go to sleep before it's dark.

I'm thinking of lunch ideas and planning the morning and afternoon routines. I am talking to Little K about school constantly and preparing her for what is sure to be quite a shock. Apparently they don't do a kindergarten orientation, just an open house tonight. I'm hoping I get a little more information about drop off and pick up, lunch time hours, snack time foods, school rules, and upcoming events if there are any.

This is one of the times parenting feels like a job. Let's face it I have to get up before 8 AM every day and put pants on, I haven't done that in the 2.5 years since I started working from home. There will be no sunrise watching, no impromptu sunsets if they fall after bedtime, no more morning dog walks before the world wakes up.

We're all going to adjust but it's going to take a week or so to get into the swing of things. Once I do maybe I can get some words read but until then I'm returning another book from my wait list to the library unread and returning it to my "to-read" list.

What keeps you from reading books? How do you get back into the swing of things after a major schedule change?

  1. Sometimes I get burnt out on reading. Like, I will go through phases where I will literally read 1-2 books a day (how I do this with working full time, I have no clue)!. Other times it can take me 3+ weeks to read a book that I love. And, sometimes life just gets really busy...like right now for example...I am so busy that reading is just at the bottom of the list.

  2. It's nice that they're having an open house to give everyone a chance to get acquainted with things. It'll prob take a few months to come up with and get used to a routine, but, I know you can and will! :)
I read every night before bed, even if sometimes it's only for 15 minutes. It helps me get cozy and ready for sleep - and you have to sleep every night no matter what your schedule is like!

  3. This is beautifully written. Good luck with the first week of school! And I'm sure you'll fall naturally back into reading once things settle into the new routine.

  4. I usually stop reading when my books don't interest me anymore. My best reading time is before bed, which is why I have to have ebooks or else I would keep Andrew awake! I think sometimes the easiest way to create a new schedule is to start from scratch. Instead of working around what used to exist, just start over so you can focus on what works best rather than trying to fit what you need into what already existed, if that makes sense.

  5. I'm in a no-read time right now. My brain just wants a break after I've read a lot sometimes. I am reading magazines, but honestly mostly skimming those too. And that's okay.

There's a time for everything. This is not a reading time for you!

  6. I am in a bit of a slump with reading this week. I flew through my last book because it was so good but having a hard time getting in to my new one. I have been watching more tv and scanning things on my phone more than reading which is odd for me. Getting in to a new routine can be a tough one. My prime reading time is during lunch during the week. Anything I get besides that is just bonus! Good luck with the first week of school! I am sure you will all adjust fine :)

  7. I don't have any children yet but definitely notice how time management and fitting in that relaxation just gets harder as we get older. Especially because it seems like it's the first thing to fly off the map when life happens- which sucks since it brings so much joy! I'm sure you will find a way to squeeze it in soon enough :) I imagine the beginning of the school year with a child would be quite hectic!

  8. Such a change to have to be on a schedule after being really flexible the last few years. I can hardly accept coming back from a 1 week vacation and being on a schedule. I know you'll both do great with the adjustment though! Always hard to relax and settle into a book when there are so many to-dos on the list! I just have to wait it out. Like right now, camping over the weekend took a lot of energy out of me so I'm tired in the evenings, when I normally read.

  9. stick to the routine, that's what i do to get back into it. also one trick i introduced to make mornings more sane: have K pick out her outfit the night before and no changies. the last thing you want is arguments over what she's going to wear/hurry up/she can't decide etc. i tell kayla the weather for the day and i don't care what she picks as long as it's weather appropriate.

  10. I dont have kids but Im sure the change is drastic for you and I can appreciate that. Hopefully it all settles down soon and you all get the hang of the new change!

  11. Starting school for the first time is a huge adjustment, just do what you can. Sometimes things just have to take a back seat.
