// Church of marvels by Leslie Parry - I'm not sure what to say about this book, it was an interesting read and a unique concept. The mid-plot twist was revealed with such finesse it took me a minute to put it all together. My reading of this book coincided with the reveal of Caitlyn Jenner which seemed very appropriate to me at the time. I gave this book 3 stars.
// Judy Moody Get's Famous by Megan McDonald - I was hesitant to read this book to Little K after my problems with Judy's attitude in book one but Little K insisted we keep reading. I'm glad we did, Judy's attitude is much improved in this book and the lesson at the end is well worth the read. I gave this book 4 stars.
// Beach Town by Mary Kay Andrews - The plot for this book was far fetched but interesting enough to keep me reading. Not the great summer beach read I've been looking for but still a good book to have in your beach bag. I gave this book 3 stars.
// Things You Won't Say by Sarah Pekkanen - Written from the POV of the wife, officer, and family of a police officer who has just shot an "unarmed teen" this book fits right in with today's news headlines. It provides very interesting look at what the families, friends, and officers go through after this type of incident. If you love books with a ending twist you would never see coming this book is for you. I gave this book 3 stars.
// The Beach House by Jane Green - This book is written in the third person POV which was hard for me to get the hang of at first, each time I picked up the book after a break I noted how odd the POV was. I really felt like the author should have found a synonym for truculent after about the 5th time I read it as a character description. While the book takes place in New England several of the characters seem to have English accents which I find a little odd. I gave this book 3 stars.
// Judy Moody Saves The World by Megan McDonald - Little K really loved the save the Earth keep the environment clean theme of this book. It's a little strange that the teacher lets the kids distract him from having math lessons on a regular basis but overall a good read with a good message. I gave this book 4 stars.
// Eight Hundred Grapes by Laura Dave - This book has a lot of great reviews and is on several summer read lists but I just felt eh about the whole story. The main character seems a bit dumb in addition to a bit confused about her life. In the end she did make the right decisions. I gave this book 3 stars.
// Paper Towns by John Green - I really liked Looking Alaska and when I saw the movie preview for this book I thought it sounded interesting so I put it on my library hold list. I had a hard time getting into the story and almost put the book down several times. The end was super long winded and I skimmed it just to find out what happened. I gave this book 3 stars because Goodreads won't let me give it 2.5.
BONUS BOOK
// The Rumor by Elin Hilderbrand - Finally the summer read I've been waiting for! I loved how the small town rumor mill was written. Although a sub plot to the main event I enjoyed the story of the twins the most and it was good to see characters returning from some of Hilderbrand's other books. I'd often wondered when reading her stories why the paths of her characters don't cross more often. A fun easy beach book that won't let you down. I gave this book 4 stars.
What have you been reading?

i dont know what it is but i just can't seem to get into john green's books. i think i'm the only person who hated fault in our stars and ended up returning it after trying to get through 3 chapters.
ReplyDeleteSo many good books to add to my list!!!
ReplyDeleteCan I just say ... I was wondering where you disappeared to! Im so glad I found your blog back :D
I couldn't get into Paper Towns. I mean, I did finish it, but I thought it was a ton of build up for a very boring ending. Just my opinion!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't a big fan of Paper Towns either. I didn't get all of the hype around it. I hated Margo! I really like Quentin and his friends but that was about it.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to add Rumors to my list.
ReplyDeleteI loved two John Greene books and no others, including Paper Towns.
Church of Marvels is definitely getting added to my list as well as Things You Won't Say.
ReplyDeleteI read Paper Towns when it first came out and I didn't love it. Looking for Alaska and An Abundance of Katherines are my favorite Green books.
I loved Paper Towns! Sad you didn't like it.
ReplyDeleteI think I might like Things You Didn't Say so I'm going to add it to my list. The child never got into Judy Moody. She was a Junie B. Jones fan instead.
Elin Hilderbrand is an absolute favorite of mine! So glad to see you enjoyed it. I'm waiting to get my hands on this. I love that all her books take place in the summer on Nantucket. It's like coming home even with different characters.
ReplyDeleteI liked Paper Towns, although I will admit that sometimes I like John Green's books more after re-reading. I was way underwhelmed at TFIOS at first, but after a few re-reads fell for it. It'll be interesting to see how they transferred PT to a movie.
ReplyDeleteI was so disappointed for you that you read so many three stars! I am definitely going to check out Rumors. I usually enjoy her books.
ReplyDeleteSo many of these are on my to-read list. Things You Won't Say sounds interested especially with all the news stories about it.
ReplyDeleteI also did NOT like Paper Towns! Not enough about the concept of paper towns and people living/being in them. That would have given the story much more depth. The movie. Egh.
ReplyDeleteI thought about adding Paper Towns because of the movie too, but felt like it got mixed reviews. I'm still on the fence. I hate when I have meh reading months!
ReplyDeleteThe Rumor sounds fun, I will have to add that to my list. I saw Eight Hundred Grapes on so many lists the last few weeks but it just doesn't seem like my jam. I think you solidified my suspicion on it. Paper Towns is on my list, but I don't have high hopes for it after reading a few peoples reviews. We shall see. I love book day!
ReplyDeleteI've had paper Towns on my list forever so I'm bummed it wasn't good (but will likely still try it because I persevere!) I added the police officer book - sounds interesting!
ReplyDeletei totally get what you mean about paper towns - i enjoyed it but the ending was disappointing and super long winded. oh well.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you. I liked Looking For Alaska so much better than Paper Towns. I'm adding The Rumor and Things You Won't Say to my list!
ReplyDeleteAdding Church of Marvels to my reading list now. I wasn't a huge fan of Looking for Alaska so I've been avoiding John Green novels temporarily.
ReplyDeleteAdded Church of Marvels - the story intrigues me. I read The Fault in our Stars. I've intended to read other John Green books. Just haven't felt the urge to get to them. I feel like if I miss them, it's not the end of the world, right? Things You Won't Say does sound perfectly timed for the current climate in the US. Sometimes I wonder if an author has rushed a book or a publishing company has rushed it to publication to ride the wave.
ReplyDeleteI think I just ordered a Elin Hilderbrand book about Summer so I'm hoping it's on par with the one you read! Paper Towns is on my list for the Literary Ladies challenge and I read somewhere that it was based out of Orlando, so I'm still excited to read it. I love that you review books you read with your daughter. If I was a mom, that would be awesome to see mixed in with book reviews of books I might enjoy. I mean, I'm not a mom and I still think it is the coolest thing! Hope you find more great Summer reads!!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely adding The Rumor. LOL at Goodreads not letting you give Paper Towns 2.5 stars! I keep debating if I want to read that one or not. I've seen a lot of mixed reviews, so it probably won't be high on my list.
