Most of us use and love Goodreads but I often wonder if other people are using it for the same things I am or if they are doing something different. I've tried to figure out Groups and I'm still clueless there but have you checked out the compare books feature? No? That's why I'm here!
Of course I add to books to my shelves, which are pretty self-explanatory to read (what I want to read someday and what I use when looking for library books), reading (what I'm reading now), and read (what I've already read). I've also created a Favorites shelf so the favorite books section of my profile accurately reflects books I consider to be favorites. You can change the shelf featured in this section using the options on your profile page in the Your Name Here Favorite's Section.
Another section I use heavily is the recommendations section, I have a bad habit of sticking with author's I've read and am familiar with. If I find a new author and I like one book I'll read everything they've ever written. The recommendations section helps me branch out by showing my books I might like based on books I already do like. Recommendations are updated weekly and I stalk Goodreads every week waiting for the update, then I add books to my to read shelf like a mad woman. Some are hits and some are misses but I'm never short on books to choose from.
Want to compare books with your friends like I mentioned above? Head over to your friends list, pick a friend, and choose "compare books". It will tell you how many books you have in common and what percentage of those books you both loved or hated. Want to know even more, click on book compatibility test on the upper right of your screen and you'll see how compatible your tastes are in each genre. Not a bad way to help know if you're reading a book your friend might want to read next.
Don't forget to enter the giveaways if you want free books, Kate does a great job of explaining Goodreads giveaways here. So far I've gotten 5 free books this way, not a ton but enough to keep me trying when I see something I like listed.
Want to know what the rest of Goodreads users are reading, check out the Popular section under Explore. You never know what knew and exciting books wait.
How do you use Goodreads?
Kelli
I use Goodreads purely to keep my To Read and Read lists. I don't spend a lot of time perusing it, but I do look at recommendations and I do scroll through what friends are reading.
ReplyDeleteAre the giveaways actual books or ereader books?
Physical books for the giveaways!
DeleteI didn't even know about the "compare books" function! That's something I'll have to try!
ReplyDeleteI use Goodreads to track the books I've read and what I liked. I use it also to determine if the book is worth reading by looking at the reviews. I love the giveaways section and have won a few books that way!

I use it mostly to keep track of what I read, and want to read. I have entered Giveaway but barely win. I love seeing what my friends think of a book and the recommendations section through don't check that often. I am never without a book to read! Ha!
ReplyDeleteThat's so fun! Off to Goodreads to compare myself to everyone I know!!! (Up til now I've really just been using the lists. I tried joining a book club on there and it didn't work for me.)
ReplyDeleteI use it mainly to track what I want to read and what I've read. And spy on my friends' reading lists :)
ReplyDeleteI probably could be better about using it but I just don't have the desire right now.
I don't use Goodreads. I should probably start, but I fel like it's another thing to come up with. I know, lame. My sister's sister-in-law is a librarian, and she posts almost every day on FB suggestions of new books to read. So I usually go off what she suggests
