I got my shit together this month so I could link up with Steph and Jana for Show Us Your Books. I love these book posts I always find something new to add to my "to-read" list. So here's what I read last month or in some cases didn't read because I don't waste time with books I'm not enjoying.
Casebook by Mona Simpson - First up a book I didn't finish, by about the half way point I still wasn't really sure what the main plot point was and I really didn't care to keep reading to find out. I usually put a book down before halfway but something about this book made me think, "hey this story will improve." I didn't, this book gets 1 star.
The Hurricane Sister by Dorthea Benton Frank - I give this book an eh, the last few Dottie Frank books haven't really thrilled me the way the first few did. The story line wasn't hugely creative and the writing was just average. I give this book 3 stars.
Yes Please by Amy Poehler - I was worried I was going to be disappointed by this book, I love Amy when I watch her but sometimes humor doesn't translate well in writing. I wasn't disappointed at all, while not as in depth and juicy as you would like a celebrity book to be (so tell me more about this divorce) her humor was there and I laughed a few times. I give this book 4 stars.
Shadow Spell by Nora Roberts - I'll admit I like a little formulaic romance now and then, this hits the mark. While this book was better than the first book I know the last book in the trilogy is where the real actions awaits. I give this book 3 stars.
The Secret Life of Violet Grant by Beatriz Williams - I really wanted to like this book more than I did based on how much I love Williams last book A Hundred Summers. Unfortunately I didn't even like this book half as much, I wasn't a huge fan of the Vivian/Gogo story line and the paragraphs of science related writing had my eyes glazing over. I did like the little twist at the end so I give this book 3 stars.
A Year On Ladybug Farm by Donna Ball - Goodreads kept recommending this book to me so even though my library doesn't stock it I decided I spend the $3 on half.com and read the book anyway. I loved the idea of 3 old friends (friendship stories are my favorite) buying an old house/farm and living together while farming and fixing it up. There were a few plot lines I wish would have been expanded more and few that could probably have been left out but over all I enjoyed this book, I give it 3 stars.
First Frost by Sarah Addision Allen - I put my name on the library hold list for this book in January and I was 6th in line on the hold list when the library finally stocked it. The first book in this series, Garden Spells, was the first Allen book I read, I love how she mixes just a little bit of magic into each of her stories. I also love that this book followed Garden Spells so many years apart, story wise, it gave me a chance to see how the characters had changed in developed since the Garden Spells story. I recommend any of Allen's books and I give this book 4 stars.
You by Caroline Kepnes - As disturbing as this book was I still loved it, well worth the half.com price since again my library didn't stock this book. Focused on a how much of a footprint we leave on the internet with our social media and email accounts it helped to reassure me that I had made the right choice when deciding to delete the beachy soup blog. I give this fucked up book 4 stars and a recommendation to the author to seek a little professional help.
What did yo read last month that you loved or hated?
Kelli

Yes, Please is on my list. I need to get to it already. The last one is creeping me out and I haven't read it...yet! Sounds really good.
ReplyDeleteI love your review of You, especially that last line! So true. I enjoyed Yes Please but the printing on photo paper was so unnecessary.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of the other books. With your reviews, I doubt I'll be adding them to my list which is why honesty in reviews is crucial.
I can't wait to read "You". Last month, I really didn't like Steve Jobs' biography. Boooooooring.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to check out Ladybug Farm.
ReplyDeleteI liked Violet Grant, but not as much as 100 Summers.
Dottie Frank books are not good anymore. I used to really love them.
I can't remember if I read that SAA book or not.
Yes, Please is definitely one that I want to read, so I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed it! I think she's hilarious so I was hoping the book would be too
ReplyDeleteYour last review had me cracking up!! I'm in limbo about what to do about my own blog now. Ha!
ReplyDeleteI loved the Cousin O'Drwyer books (Shadow Spell), I finished them the moment they came out and the last book is for sure the best.
ReplyDeleteI am waiting patiently for You from my library and I have added Ladybug Farm per your review!!
You is definitely on my "to read" list. I like books that are disturbing, yet oh-so-good.
